WWF praises PPA as first industry body to support new Forest Campaign

The PPA has been praised by WWF for its progressive approach to sustainability after becoming the first industry body to support the conservation group’s new Forest Campaign.

Speaking at the PPA Sustainability Summit at BMA House on 25 November, Julia Young, Manager of WWF UK’s Global Forest & Trade Network, thanked the PPA for issuing a declaration of support on behalf of members.

The aim of the Forest Campaign is to close the legal loopholes in the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR) so that all timber and timber products must be from legal sources and mechanisms are put in place to enable a market in 100% sustainable timber and timber products by 2020.



PPA members Immediate Media Co. and Tudor Rose are among the companies to have signed up on an individual basis, along with PPA Strategic Partner Polestar UK Print.

Young said 404m hectares of global forest are now covered by the FSC and PEFC certification standards, which she described as a “massive achievement”, but added that worldwide demand for timber products was set to treble by 2050.

Forestry was just one of the many key environmental issues discussed at the free-to-attend, half-day PPA Sustainability Summit, which highlighted innovative and practical ways that publishers can achieve clear business benefits by improving the sustainability of their supply chains.



Moderated by Robert Dark, Head of Production and Procurement at Future, the event included an overview of the PPA’s new Hitchhiker’s Guide to Sustainability by Michael Sturges from Innventia Edge, the PPA’s Carbon Footprint Consultant.
